Vinyl Cleaner Showdown

Pictured above are the four products I had or had delivered for this test.  Each section below contains information on the tests performed and the results there of.  Only the two true vinyl cleaners were used in tests 2 and 3 as the results in test one ruled out the other two as being options for a real comparison.  From left to right we have:
Diluted Simple Green

Diluted Simple Green:

This was thrown in for a benchmark comparison as a non vinyl specific harsh cleaner.  I have had decent results with Simple Green in the past for killing mold and mildew on my vinyl.   Due to its harsh nature, I did not want to continue using it unless it proved to be irreplacable for certain types of cleaning.

Exquisite Vinyl and Upholstery Cleaner

Exquisite Vinyl and Upholstery Cleaner:

I found out about this product from Ace Distributing Ltd. on WakeWorld.   A lengthy post there had asked for options to clean and condition vinyl.  Before the thread was over, Susan Benken had chimed in with a special on ordering for WakeWorld users.  How could I resist?  It is a true cleaner and conditioner.  It is sold through ebay and through contact with Ace Distributing Ltd.  It boasts the ability to deep clean and condition at the same time.  It arrived very quickly after ordering along with a brush and microfiber.  This product suprisingly lasted longer than I expected.  It spreads easlily.

3M Vinyl Cleaner and Restorer

3M Vinyl Cleaner and Restorer:

This has been my preferred cleaning product since I began trying to condition and clean my vinyl.  It can be picked up through many auto parts warehouses, and also Wal Mart.  This product seems to go fast, probably due to the thickness.

303 Aerospace Protectant

303 Aerospace Protectant:

This is another that is not a true cleaning product, but with the plethora of posts on the internet about its clenaing abilities, I figured I would use it to also establish a basline.  It is more of a surface protectant for your vinyl, and I have religously used it as such. This one can be found at West Marine, SkiDim, and other local or online retailers.  This is another go fast product.  Again, I think the thickness has something to do with the coverage.

Getting a Baseline

Before getting to the core cleaning abilities, I wanted to establish which products I would use to clean.  I laid out one of my older cushions, taped off four sections, and used each product as instructed.  Although it isn't super apparent in the photographs below, it was easy to see the Simple Green solution and the 303 were not going to be useful for further testing.  The other two products seemed to clean better with less effort.  In order from left to right: Simple Green, Exquisite, 3M, 303.

Further Comparison

After the first test, I was more impressed with the cleaning abilities of the 3M than that of the Exquisite.  The following test had me liking the 3M even a little better.  Maybe it is the mullett loving history of redneck in me, but I like the greasy armorall like prescence the 3M was leaving.  It also felt better to the touch as far as conditioning goes.  For this test I sectioned off a larger cushion with tape, and used the two best products again according to the label.  I did not require using a brush yet, as this cushion was one of the newer ones and for the most part wiped clean with a microfiber.  This test showed both products to have about the same cleaning ability, and also the difference in the appearance after the product was wiped off.  3M leaves a greasy, some may call messy, shine to the cushion.  It is a love hate for me so at this point I was still voting even on these two products.  Exquisite seemed to clean and leave no residue.  You can actually see where some overspray landed on the Exquisite side.

Final Test

For the final test, I picked an area that I have never been able to get fully clean with any products.  I have always had a problem with the mildew deep into the texture of the vinyl.  Once again I sectioned off an area and applied the products to each side.  This time I did the test in 3 parts.  First was a simple spray and wipe.  Next was a brush and a wipe.  Last the product was allowed to soak for 5 minutes, and then brush, then wipe.  After this test was complete, the true winner was obvious.

With the final test, picking Exquisite as the better overall cleaner was an easy choice.  I plan on using it to clean up all my upholstery.  While I had it in the boat, I also tested it on the carpet, which it says it is good on, and that worked awesome.  If you need to order some of this stuff to try out, get to Ace Distributing Ltd's ebay store and make an order.  You will be pleased with the results.  My vinyl looks like it should: clean.  It is only now that I can see the 3M wasn't really deep cleaning so much as it was making everything shiny and giving the illusion of clean.  For the price, it is worth a try.
